Increasing Precision without Altering Treatment Effects: Repeated Measures Designs in Survey Experiments

چکیده

The use of survey experiments has surged in political science. most common design is the between-subjects which outcome only measured posttreatment. This relies heavily on recruiting a large number subjects to precisely estimate treatment effects. Alternative designs that involve repeated measurements dependent variable promise greater precision, but they are rarely used out fears these will yield different results than standard (e.g., due consistency pressures). Across six studies, we assess this conventional wisdom by testing experimental against each other. Contrary fears, measures tend same as more while substantially increasing precision. These also offer new insights into effect size and heterogeneity. We conclude encouraging researchers adopt providing guidelines for when how them.

Testing multiple outcomes in repeated measures designs.

This study investigates procedures for controlling the familywise error rate (FWR) when testing hypotheses about multiple, correlated outcome variables in repeated measures (RM) designs. A content analysis of RM research articles published in 4 psychology journals revealed that 3 quarters of studies tested hypotheses about 2 or more outcome variables. Several procedures originally proposed for ...

Models of accuracy in repeated-measures designs

Accuracy is often analyzed using analysis of variance techniques in which the data are assumed to be normally distributed. However, accuracy data are discrete rather than continuous, and proportion correct are constrained to the range 0–1. Monte Carlo simulations are presented illustrating how this can lead to distortions in the pattern of means. An alternative is to analyze accuracy using logi...

HE Plots for Repeated Measures Designs

Hypothesis error (HE) plots, introduced in Friendly (2007), provide graphical methods to visualize hypothesis tests in multivariate linear models, by displaying hypothesis and error covariation as ellipsoids and providing visual representations of effect size and significance. These methods are implemented in the heplots for R (Fox, Friendly, and Monette 2009a) and SAS (Friendly 2006), and appl...

How many repeated measures in repeated measures designs? Statistical issues for comparative trials

BACKGROUND In many randomized and non-randomized comparative trials, researchers measure a continuous endpoint repeatedly in order to decrease intra-patient variability and thus increase statistical power. There has been little guidance in the literature as to selecting the optimal number of repeated measures. METHODS The degree to which adding a further measure increases statistical power ca...

Trend-resistant repeated measurement Designs

The existence and non-existence of trend-resistant repeated measurement designs are investigated. Two families of efficient/optimal repeated measurement designs which are very popular among experimenters are shown to be trend-resistant or trend-resistant with respect to treatments.
